Slavery and Social Rebirth in the Black Urban Atlantic, 1680-1807: Race in the Early Modern World by Hilary McD. Beckles is a groundbreaking work that explores the complex and dynamic relationship between slavery and social rebirth in the Black Urban Atlantic during the early modern period.
Beckles argues that slavery was not simply a system of labor exploitation, but also a social and cultural process that shaped the lives of both enslaved and free people of African descent. He examines the ways in which slavery created new forms of community and identity among enslaved Africans, and how these communities became the foundation for social and political resistance.
Beckles also explores the role of the Black Urban Atlantic in the development of the modern world. He argues that the Black Urban Atlantic was a crucible for the development of new ideas about race, freedom, and citizenship. These ideas would eventually spread to other parts of the world, and help to shape the modern world.
Slavery and Social Rebirth in the Black Urban Atlantic, 1680-1807 is a major contribution to the study of slavery and the African diaspora. It is a work that will be essential reading for anyone interested in the history of slavery, the African diaspora, or the early modern world.
