After completing high school, Slattery joined the Society of Saint Columban, a Catholic missionary Free Download. In 1931, he was ordained as a priest and assigned to the Diocese of Onitsha in Nigeria.

Missionary and Educational Work

Father Slattery arrived in Nigeria during a time of significant educational challenges. The country lacked qualified teachers and educational institutions, particularly in rural areas. Slattery saw this as an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution.

In 1934, Slattery founded St. Charles College in Onitsha, one of the first secondary boarding schools in Eastern Nigeria. Slattery himself taught English, Latin, and Mathematics, instilling in his students a love of learning and a thirst for knowledge.

Over the next few decades, Slattery established numerous other schools and educational institutions, including St. Patrick's College in Asaba, St. Mary's Secondary School in Ozubulu, and St. Theresa's College in Nsukka. These institutions played a pivotal role in producing generations of educated Nigerians who would go on to become leaders in various fields.

Sports Administrator and Coach

In addition to his educational endeavors, Father Slattery was an avid sportsman and a staunch advocate for the promotion of sports in Nigeria. He recognized the power of sports to unite people, foster discipline, and promote physical fitness.

Slattery became actively involved in the administration of sports in Nigeria. He served as President of the Onitsha Divisional Football Association and later the Eastern Regional Football Association. Under his leadership, football (soccer) gained immense popularity in the region.

Slattery also coached the Eastern Nigeria national football team, leading them to numerous victories and nurturing young talents. His emphasis on teamwork, fair play, and sportsmanship left a lasting legacy in Nigerian sports.

Building a Sporting Infrastructure

Recognizing the need for proper sports facilities, Slattery spearheaded the construction of several sports complexes in Eastern Nigeria. He played a key role in the establishment of the Ogbe Stadium in Onitsha, one of the largest sports stadiums in the country at the time.

Slattery also organized sporting competitions and tournaments, creating opportunities for young athletes to showcase their talents and develop their skills. Through his efforts, Nigeria began to produce world-class athletes who competed in international competitions.
