Roots in the Scottish Diaspora

The genesis of the Royal Scots of Canada Highlanders can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when Scottish immigrants, carrying the traditions and martial spirit of their homeland, settled in the burgeoning Dominion of Canada. In 1862, a group of these intrepid Scots formed the first Highland battalion in Canada, the 52nd Battalion of Volunteer Militia.

Formal Establishment and Early Campaigns

In 1883, the battalion was officially designated as the Royal Scots of Canada Regiment and granted the privilege of wearing the kilt and sporran of the Black Watch. The regiment's baptism of fire came during the North-West Rebellion of 1885, where they played a decisive role in quelling the uprising.

The Great War: A Proving Ground of Valour

The Royal Scots of Canada Highlanders' true mettle was tested in the crucible of the First World War. As part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, the regiment fought with distinction in numerous battles, including the Battle of the Somme, Vimy Ridge, and Passchendaele.

Their unwavering courage and sacrifice earned them a reputation for unwavering resolve, and they became known as "The Black Devils of Mons" after their heroic stand against overwhelming odds at the Battle of Mons in 1914.

Interwar Years and the Road to War

Following the Great War, the Royal Scots of Canada Highlanders continued to serve as a mainstay of the Canadian military, participating in peacekeeping missions and training exercises. With the outbreak of the Second World War, the regiment was mobilized once more.

Second World War: From D-Day to Victory

The Second World War brought forth new challenges and opportunities for the Royal Scots of Canada Highlanders. They participated in the Allied landings at Normandy on D-Day, fought in the liberation of France and Belgium, and ultimately entered war-torn Germany.

Throughout their campaigns, they displayed the same indomitable spirit that had become their hallmark.

Post-War Service and Modern Missions

In the aftermath of the Second World War, the Royal Scots of Canada Highlanders played a vital role in peacekeeping operations around the world. They served with distinction in Korea, Cyprus, the Balkans, and Afghanistan, earning a reputation for professionalism and unwavering commitment to duty.

Legacy and Heritage

Today, the Royal Scots of Canada Highlanders remains an active regiment within the Canadian Armed Forces, continuing the proud traditions of their predecessors. Their regimental museum in Victoria, British Columbia, showcases their rich history and honours the sacrifices made by the Highlanders throughout the years.

: A Regiment of Honour

The Royal Scots of Canada Highlanders is a living testament to the indomitable spirit of the Scottish warrior. Throughout their storied history, they have demonstrated unwavering courage, sacrifice, and resilience in the face of adversity. Their legacy of valour and honour stands as an inspiration to generations of soldiers and civilians alike.

As we turn the pages of their history, we are filled with a deep sense of gratitude for their service to Canada and the global community. The Royal Scots of Canada Highlanders will forever be etched in the annals of history as one of the most distinguished regiments in the world.
