Description

Negotiating the State in Urban Turkey examines how urban residents in Turkey interact with the state and how these interactions shape urban governance. Drawing on ethnographic research in two gecekondu neighborhoods in Istanbul, the book shows how residents navigate the complex and often contradictory demands of the state, and how they use their own resources and strategies to shape their urban environment. In ng so, the book provides a unique perspective on the relationship between the state and society in Turkey, and on the challenges and opportunities of urban governance in the global South.

Reviews

"Negotiating the State in Urban Turkey is a rich and nuanced study of the complex and often contradictory relationship between the state and society in Turkey. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in urban governance, state-society relations, and Turkey." - Harvey Molotch, University of California, Santa Barbara
