About the Author
Jacqueline Auriol (1917-2000) was a French pilot and engineer. She was the first female officer in the French Air Force and one of the most decorated aviators in history. Auriol set several world records for aviation and served as a role model for women around the world.
Auriol was born in 1917 in Challans, France. She was the daughter of a doctor and a nurse. She became interested in aviation at a young age and began taking flying lessons at the age of 17. In 1938, she became the first female pilot to receive a commercial pilot's license in France.
During World War II, Auriol served as a pilot in the French Resistance. She flew reconnaissance missions and transported supplies to the front lines. In 1945, she was awarded the Croix de Guerre for her service.
After the war, Auriol continued to fly. She set several world records for aviation, including the record for the fastest speed ever flown by a woman. She also became a test pilot for several aircraft manufacturers.
In addition to her flying career, Auriol was also an accomplished engineer. She designed several aircraft and wrote several books about aviation. She was also a vocal advocate for gender equality and encouraged women to pursue careers in aviation.
