Makinen's story is both harrowing and inspiring, and it will resonate with anyone who has ever faced adversity.

From Darkness to Light

Makinen was born in a small town in Michigan. Her parents were both deaf, and she was raised in a world of sign language and silence. As a child, Makinen struggled to communicate with her hearing peers. She often felt isolated and alone.

But Makinen was determined to overcome her deafness. She began taking speech therapy at a young age, and she eventually learned to lip-read and speak. Makinen's progress was slow and difficult, but she never gave up.

In high school, Makinen began to excel in her studies. She was a talented writer, and she won several awards for her essays and poems. Makinen also became involved in extracurricular activities, such as the debate team and the drama club.

After graduating from high school, Makinen attended Gallaudet University, the only university in the world designed specifically for deaf and hard of hearing students. At Gallaudet, Makinen flourished. She made new friends, excelled in her studies, and discovered her passion for writing.

After graduating from Gallaudet, Makinen went on to earn a master's degree in education. She then worked as a teacher at a school for deaf children. Makinen loved her job, and she made a real difference in the lives of her students.

A Life-Changing Accident

In 2005, Makinen was involved in a car accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury. The accident caused Makinen to lose her hearing and her speech. She was devastated by the loss of her senses, and she felt like her life was over.

But Makinen was not about to give up. She began working with a speech therapist and a sign language interpreter. Slowly but surely, Makinen began to regain her hearing and her speech.

It took Makinen several years to recover from her accident. But she never gave up on herself. She eventually regained her hearing and her speech, and she went on to live a full and happy life.
