Akbar the Great was born in Umarkot, India, in 1542. He was the son of Emperor Humayun and Hamida Banu Begum. Akbar ascended to the throne in 1556 at the age of 13, and he ruled for 49 years, during which time he expanded the Mughal Empire to its greatest extent. He was a tolerant and enlightened ruler, and he promoted religious freedom and cultural exchange. He died in Agra in 1605, at the age of 63.
