Early Life and Career

Ella Wheeler Wilcox was born in Johnstown Center, Wisconsin, on November 5, 1850. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a schoolteacher. Wilcox began writing poetry at a young age, and her first poem was published in a local newspaper when she was just 14 years old.

In 1880, Wilcox married Robert Wilcox, a traveling salesman. The couple moved to New York City, where Wilcox began to publish her poems in magazines and newspapers. In 1883, she published her first book of poetry, Poems of Passion.

Success and Popularity

Wilcox's poems quickly became popular, and she soon became one of the most well-known poets in America. She published several more books of poetry, including Poems of Pleasure (1887),Maurine (1888),and The Heart of a Woman (1899).

Wilcox's poems were often characterized by their romantic and sentimental themes. She wrote about love, loss, and heartbreak, and her poems often expressed the emotions of women. Her work resonated with readers, and she became known as the "poet of the people."

Wilcox also wrote several books of prose, including The World's Best Poetry (1894),Poems of Cheer (1899),and How to Be Happy Though Married (1911). She also lectured extensively throughout the United States and Europe.

Death and Legacy

Wilcox died in New York City on October 30, 1919. She was 68 years old. Wilcox was a prolific writer, and she left behind a large body of work. Her poems have been translated into over 20 languages, and she is still considered one of the most popular poets of her day.
